In our series My Monday Morning, self-motivated people tell WSJ. how they start off the week.
Bill Nye is methodical through and through, not least about his morning coffee. “One of the hilariousnesses about a gadget boy’s life,” says Nye, 65, referring to himself, “I have three coffee makers on the deck.” He’s of the opinion that right now the Technivorm—a hand-assembled Dutch machine that uses copper boiling—is the best coffee maker on the market. “[The water] comes out of nine holes like a showerhead,” he says. “And the lid is rocking. It has the funnel-shaped tube that goes down so the evaporation is greatly reduced.” Nye also has a Chemex (“[Chemex] was a big ritual for my father”) and a Nespresso machine (“pretty good but not the same jolt as a real espresso”). The goal for coffee, he says, is to taste as good as it smells.
Nye, who started his professional life as an engineer and then a stand-up comic, became famous for the children’s show Bill Nye the Science Guy that aired on PBS in the ’90s. He’s known for distilling scientific concepts into terms almost anyone can understand, aided by his irreverent sense of humor and endearing enthusiasm. He now has a podcast, Science Rules! With Bill Nye and has released bestselling books that include Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World and Everything All at Once: How to Unleash Your Inner Nerd, Tap Into Radical Curiosity and Solve Any Problem.. In March, Peacock announced a forthcoming series hosted and executive produced by Nye called The End Is Nye, on earthly disasters and threats. He’s also the CEO of the Planetary Society, a nonprofit space advocacy organization that works to advance space exploration and science. Right now he’s based in Los Angeles, and he also has a place in New York. Here, he speaks to WSJ. about one of his few regrets in life and the book he thinks everyone should read.
What time do you get up on Mondays? What’s the first thing you do after waking up?
I get up a little after 7. Of course, we have goals, we dream of getting up at 5:30 and getting a bunch of things done. What I generally do is watch the first few minutes, recorded, of CBS This Morning. Because I’m an old man and that’s how I get my news.
