Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk and City Manager John Connet will welcome residents and their questions about the city during the third monthly Coffee with the Mayor gathering Tuesday, July 20 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m.
Coffee with the Mayor will be held at the Center for Art & Entertainment at 125 S. Main St., Hendersonville. The event is free with reservations by calling 828-697-8547 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. A complimentary coffee bar will be provided.
About City Manager John Connet
Connet has been the city of manager since May 2013. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the local government.
Before coming to Hendersonville, he was city manager of Clinton for 11 years, town manager of Winterville for three years and worked for the city of Hickory for seven years as risk manager and planner.
Connet has 28 years of experience in municipal government and has a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University and Master of Public Administration from Appalachian State University.
In addition to his city manager duties, he also serves as an adjunct professor in WCU’s Master of Public Affairs program. He is a credentialed member of the International City/County Manager Association and is a member and the past president of the North Carolina City and County Management Association.
He currently serves on the Western Carolina University Alumni Association Board of Directors and previously served on the North Carolina League of Municipalities Board of Directors. He is an Eagle Scout and 2018 North Carolina Main Street Champion. He is also the recipient of the Robert L. Shepherd Excellence in Local Government Award.
Connet and his wife, Lori, are the proud parents of two daughters, Natalie, 18), and Lillie, 16.
About Mayor Barbara Volk
Barbara has served on the City Council since 1989. She is originally from Chicago and moved to Hendersonville in 1975.
She attended Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She also received a degree as a medical record administrator from the allied health school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.
She is a professional registered parliamentarian and before retirement was self-employed providing computer services for small businesses and nonprofits. She and her late husband, Dr. James Volk, decided to relocate to Hendersonville after Dr. Volk received a job opportunity. They wanted to live in a town that is small and family friendly.
Named the 2020 ATHENA Award Winner for Henderson County, Volk has served on the City Council since 1989. She is the first female mayor serving the city and has served as mayor since December 2009. The international award was established to honor the achievements of exceptional women leaders.
