A pandemic, high living costs and lack of substantial wage growth has meant an increase in the amount of people experiencing food insecurity throughout Australia.

“A global Ipsos survey has shown that more than half of Australians have been paying more for food and other essential services since Covid began, and as is often the case during a crisis, it is those on or below the poverty line who suffer the most,” retail expert Ingrid Maynard said.

To help Aussie households make ends meet, Coles has lowered the price of more than 200 products including key winter staples like soups, tea, oats and convenience meals.

Other essential items, including Finish 0 per cent dishwasher tablets 42 pack (from $42 to $17) and 10 packs of Moccona coffee capsules (from $6 to $4.50), have also been dropped.

Australian sow stall free pork mince 500g is down from $6 to $5 and Coles RSPCA chicken portions have been reduced from $7.80 to $5.50 per kilo.

Coles general manager of merchandise, strategy and transformation, Martin Smithson, said the company had lowered the price of 500 products since the start of the year.

Mum-of-two Natalie Scanlon said cheaper food items would be a game changer when it came to dinnertime, and could benefit struggling families.

“If the cost of groceries are lower, the less pressure on families at meal times,” she said. “Everyone deserves to have a meal and food needs to be accessible and affordable.

“It would not only benefit me financially, but it would allow me to be far more versatile in the kitchen and stray from the meals I’ve had on repeat since lockdowns began.”
